I'm gonna do it......

......and I'm writing it down here in order to hold myself to it.  I am going to run the Philly 1/2 Marathon on November 23rd.  I've been thinking about running a half marathon for the past month.  I wanted to run the Burg's 1/2 but it was on a Sunday - on the first Sunday of Sunday school, on the Sunday we have special guest musicians, on a Sunday just a bit too early in my training schedule.  So, I looked for another 1/2 marathon and a training program.

I found both.  I like my training program.  I'm at the beginning.  My "short" runs are about 5 1/2 miles with intervals and my "long" runs are at 7 or 8 miles.  I've found a training partner for the long runs and someone who wants to run the Philly 1/2 with me.  I have great running socks (unbelievably important).  My toenail is soon to be gone.  My Shuffle is charged.  And I'll soon have new running shoes (they need to be replaced more often now).

I'm working with a trainer so I'm "cross training."  He has me counting calories.  Its not nearly as hard as you'd think because I eat pretty much the same thing most every day.  Once you know how many calories are in a 1/2 cup bowl of granola, you got your breakfast count down.  Now I'm eating the right things - which, by the way, includes a lot of carbs (YES!!!!).

Unfortunately or fortunately (it depends how you look at it), it is also the Philly Marathon, which means there will be about 18,000 runners.  This, I would say, is a relatively big way to start out my racing career.  I have never run a race - not even a 5K.  I really have no interest in the smaller races.  I am not a fast runner and I think short races are for fast runners.  I like the idea of plodding along for 13.1 miles.  I will be near the back of the pack but I will finish (I hope) and that will be enough for me.

So there you have it - I'm running a 1/2 marathon.  That is what I'm up to.  I'm running four days a week.  I'm lifting the others.  I'm eating carbs.  I'm even dreaming about running.  And I suspect, that pretty much sums up my activity for the next 9 weeks.
